Volunteer with us

Boots

The Army Families Federation (AFF) believes that volunteers can make a huge difference in helping us to achieve our vision of becoming the leading Families’ Federation, representing and communicating to everyone with a soldier in their life.

We offer flexible roles as needs arise, so, if you’ve got time to spare, why not share your skills with us?

How much time do I need to give?

A: Each role is different but generally we ask for no more than a few hours a month maximum. If you have more time to offer, you can volunteer for more than one role.

Who will support me as a volunteer?

A: This will depend on the role you do, but you will have a designated point of contact to help you in your role, and with any admin.

Do I have to be part of an Army family?

A: No. Most of our roles do require you to have an understanding of Army family life; however, our roles require a variety of skills and experience and this is what we recruit against.

What do AFF volunteers do?

Our volunteers help in many ways to ensure AFF reaches even more Army families – one volunteer can reach many families!

Overseas: AFF is keen to promote our work in overseas posting locations. If you have time to attend events, speak to families and feedback to us about your location, you could be an overseas volunteer.

Local publicity: Do you have time to distribute AFF’s publications? Help us spread the word in your area as a local publicity volunteer.

Events: Do you like getting out and meeting people? As an events volunteer you can attend coffee mornings, school events, community centres and other local meetings to ensure families in your area are aware of AFF and the support we can offer.

Specialist roles: These arise on an ad hoc basis as we require specialist skills and knowledge such as education, health or any other area of expertise.

Case study…

Sarah Thomas“I initially volunteered for the role of AFF local publicity volunteer in Edinburgh as I was fed up of facing the same problems each time I moved. Then in February, my husband called me at work with the news we were posted to Milan - cue manic laughing and exploding brain…

I soon realised I might be able to transfer my AFF volunteer role to Italy; I love volunteering for AFF and being able to be a voice for others rather than just whinging to my husband!

Volunteering allows me to promote the work of AFF to people I meet who may not otherwise have heard about us via official channels. I’m also now more aware of the issues of social isolation and language and cultural difficulties Army spouses face when being posted to such a location.

I hope my contact with AFF may help others here to enjoy such a wonderful posting.”
