AFF in Cyprus: we came, you informed, we learned

Earlier this month, AFF hosted its first roadshow of 2019, bringing the team to Cyprus to meet families and offer the chance for our Foreign & Commonwealth and Housing Specialists to tackle your issues on the sunny isle.

Our Chief Exec Sara and UK & Overseas Director Collette also took the opportunity to get involved in discussions, hear your concerns and learn more about what a Cyprus posting is currently like for Army families.

Specialist support

F&C families who came along told us they found our events to be a useful opportunity to discuss their visa and citizenship issues directly with our specialist Katherine. Housing was another key topic for discussion, particularly amongst families from Dhekelia due to move back to the UK this summer who wanted to know more about the Future Accommodation Model (FAM) and which bases would be affected; our Specialist Cat was able to reassure families who attended.

Championing families’ concerns

We also used the opportunity to meet with Commander British Forces, General James Illingsworth, where we spoke about the need for improved communications with families, particularly with regards to pre-arrivals information.

AFF Regional Manager for Cyprus Carolyn Aggar said: “It was great to have the team over from the UK, not only for families to raise their concerns directly with them, but also so that the team could get a first-hand look at what life in Cyprus is like for families stationed here. We were particularly appreciative of the support from both Commander British Forces, General James Illingsworth and the chain of command in all locations”.

AFF’s Chief Executive Sara Baade added: “Having recently seen a significant increase in the number of enquiries received from families across Cyprus, the team and I were really pleased that we could come out and speak to families about their experiences of life there. Some interesting issues were raised, and we will be taking many of these forward, both with the local chain of command and with our UK-based MOD contacts”.
