Armed Forces Covenant close-up: latest issues

AFF works to monitor any areas of potential disadvantage for Army families. As part of our focus on the Armed Forces Covenant, here we outline some key areas we are currently looking at:

Spousal employment overseas

AFF is aware of the increasing complexity of spouses and partners working when accompanying their soldier overseas, especially since Brexit. Issues include whether they can work remotely for a UK company, and the impact of this on tax, the Status of Forces Agreement and host nation agreements. AFF is currently investigating this and working to get answers for families.

Overseas voting

AFF knows that families overseas can experience significant issues when trying to vote in UK elections. We have fed in evidence from our surveys on this issue and will continue to do this.

Please could I be kept up to date on this issue. We have recently moved from the UK to the USA. The company I worked for before moving have kept me on and I’m working remotely, initially for a fixed term contract of 6 months. They found out that there’s a grace period of 6 months in the US, before tax implications become an issue.

They want to keep me on beyond the 6 months, but are concerned with how this will affect me and them.

Are you able to give any insight into this.

    Many thanks

Hello Lindi, many thanks for your comment. Our Manager Overseas would be interested to hear more details so we can build our evidence. Please email Esther on overseasmgr@aff.org.uk
    Thanks so much.

I am about to move to Shape and have been applying for remote jobs based on fact my registered address is UK (for voting reasons etc) and will still have Uk bank account. I also have indemnity cover for working anywhere so assumed it was straight forward but the above post has worried me.

    Thanks so much.

I would be really interested to see the outcome of this. I have recently moved from the UK to overseas and was originally granted the authority to continue to work however this was then declined by my employer due to cyber security issues. I have had to take an unpaid career break which has had huge impacts on not only the family financially but also my career progression.
