AFF’s Kenya Co-ordinator Nicola Green was delighted to get the chance to speak to the Secretary of State (SofS) for Defence Gavin Williamson, during his recent visit to BATUK. He was visiting as part of his first trip to Africa, to understand more about defence in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia.
Raising your concerns
As well as explaining AFF’s role in supporting families in BATUK, she talked about the issues you’ve been raising with us, such as inadequate allowances, limited spousal employment opportunities and the other challenges of daily life you’ve been experiencing.
Many of these issues were raised during our Chief Executive’s visit to Kenya this year, and we’ve been on the case, pushing for changes to improve the quality of life of Service families in both BATUK and Nairobi. There have been positive steps to support families recently including a change of rules so that spouses can work from home if working for a UK company, the introduction of training facilities for spouses, improved reporting procedures for housing faults and greater in-country support from the Army Welfare Service.
You can also read all about the improved health visitor support in Kenya in our next edition of Army&You, due out at the end of this month.
We hope that the SofS will take families’ views on board – and we’ll continue to raise your concerns with the chain of command and to work hard to improve life for Service families in Kenya.
