January 31 marked two years since the launch of the Future Accommodation Model (FAM) pilot at Aldershot Garrison. Since the launch, there have been 1,659 applications from Service personnel looking to choose their accommodation in the area. This is in addition to the FAM pilot sites at HMNB Clyde and RAF Wittering.
Army families have consistently told us that they want to have a wider range of accommodation options, so they can choose what best works for their families at different times and in different locations.
AFF has been closely involved in the FAM pilot, and has been pleased to see it offer genuine choice for Army personnel and their families, including continued access to SFA. We hope to see this choice rolled out in the wider FAM programme.
FAM offers Service personnel multiple accommodation options based on need rather than rank. It also offers the opportunity to rent privately or buy your own home with financial assistance from Defence.
Colonel Drummond, Assistant Head Personnel Services (Army), said: “The last two years have seen the FAM pilot in Aldershot benefit our people by offering greater choice over the way they live their lives. The invaluable feedback provided by those participating will help inform and shape a new accommodation policy for all our people in the coming years.”

I am currently on the FAM scheme and appreciate the help towards my mortgage. However I have a friend who was claiming £600 a month towards his private rental yet we are only entitled to £150 a month towards our mortgage?
Can you please explain why the MOD is happy to line the pockets of landords and contribute to their mortgages and not their own personnel?
Hi Lauren I have sent you an email to try and understand this further.
