Military life and your career

This summer, we’re focusing on your career. The mobile nature of military life means that your career may not follow a linear path, which could mean gaps in your CV, the need to job-hunt at each new posting and missing out on career progression and promotion opportunities.

This month, we’ll be looking at becoming your own boss, apprenticeships and options when you can’t work, such as volunteering.

In August, we’ll be looking at money matters, including pensions, National Insurance credits and maternity pay.

In September, we’d like to find out what you need in terms of childcare support and how you cope with school holiday childcare.

We’ll also be looking at when you can retain your quarter for your career and whether you can work from your SFA.

If you’re looking for careers and training support, visit Forces Families Jobs, which has established itself as a key employment and training site for military families, providing free access to more than 10,000 vacancies and a wealth of training opportunities.

It’s nice to see spouses’ career struggles being highlighted. So much more information and support must be available to those wanting to continue pursuing their career in the UK and overseas. With remote working becoming more the norm times are changing and this needs to be recognised.

Hi do you know whether there is any possibility of military families receiving 15 hours funded nursery care for two year olds? I know this is something that would help lots of us military wives!

    Hi Hanna

Thank you for contacting us about this, we are aware of the ongoing issues surrounding childcare and the costs incurred by military families. We continue to raise this to policy makers and by gathering evidence from the lived experience of Army families push for changes that will improve the situation in the future. In the meantime please take a look at our website which details childcare support that may be available to you as well as referring to the Government’s Childcare Choices webpage which enables you to check exactly what you are entitled to now and as your child gets older:
