New policy a positive step for soldiers in Scotland

AFF welcomes the announcement from the Ministry of Defence on the Scottish Rate of Income Tax (SRIT) and its application to Service personnel serving in Scotland.

For the last two years, Army families have raised their concerns with us about having to pay a higher rate of income tax during their posting to Scotland. AFF has, in turn, raised this with both the Scottish and UK Governments, and with the MOD, and we’re pleased to see families’ voices being heard.

The decision comes following discussions regarding whether this rise in tax would make a Scottish posting less attractive for some Service families.

Those Service personnel paying a higher rate of tax than in the rest of the UK will be compensated with an annual payment to make sure they pay the same amount of income tax for tax year 2018/19, regardless of where they are serving.

Further details can be found in the attached Defence Information Bulletin.
