Consumer Charter announced for military families in SFA

New measures have been unveiled as part of a review of military housing to improve standards for serving personnel and their families across all three Services.

They will include higher move-in standards for families, a commitment to more reliable repairs, and renovation of the worst homes.

In addition, military families should expect a named housing officer to be able to support them, wherever they are in the country. These measures are expected to be in place before the one-year anniversary of the announcement that 36,000 homes were being brought back into public ownership, having been bought back from Annington Homes in December 2024.

The Government announced today that living conditions for families in military housing will be transformed in a new Consumer Charter, which will be part of a new Defence Housing Strategy, due to be published later this year.

The strategy will set out further plans to improve the standard of Service family homes across the country. Overseen by the Defence Secretary and the Minister for Veterans and People, Al Carns, it will be driven by an independent review panel, which will include AFF’s Housing Specialist Cat Calder.

Cat has had more than 13 years in her role and will bring crucial experience through her work with the Army, MOD, the other two families federations and families themselves to bring their voices and experiences to the attention of policy and decision makers.

She hopes being part of the panel will bring excellent opportunities for the families federations to help shape the future of military housing based on the evidence that they have received and looks forward to working with the other panel members over the coming months.

The panel will be looking closely at the experiences of families living in SFA, in order to plan future estate requirements, as well as those exploring home ownership as an option.

AFF’s Head of Policy Rachel Smith said: “AFF enthusiastically welcomes this review, and using our evidence, we look forward to helping shape the housing requirements for serving personnel and families across the three Services to meet their needs now and in the future.”
