Barracks will not be used to house asylum seekers

The Government has now confirmed that Cameron Barracks will not be used to house asylum seekers.

This follows an announcement in October that the base in Inverness had been identified as a potential site to accommodate asylum seekers.

Under the proposal, it could have housed up to 300 single adult males aged 18 to 65 as part of a wider plan to use military sites for temporary accommodation.

The announcement prompted immediate concern from personnel and families based there. Many reached out to us directly to share how the plans might affect them and the wider Army community.

Our Devolved Nations Manager, Emma, acted quickly, raising these concerns with all relevant stakeholders, including both the UK and Scottish Governments.

She also spoke to personnel and family members at Cameron Barracks to gather first‑hand evidence about the potential impact of the proposal.

This evidence proved crucial. It enabled us to challenge the plans on behalf of the Army family, ensuring that the experiences of those who would be directly affected were placed at the centre of discussions.

Emma said: “Thank you to those that spoke to me, your evidence made a difference.”

This outcome highlights the importance of speaking up and reinforces our role in ensuring the voices of Army families are heard.
