Making changes to your SFA

Families in SFA are being given more freedom to add personal touches to their homes like shelves, patios and electric vehicle charging points.

A new green and amber traffic light system makes it clear what permanent enhancements are allowed when you are making changes to your SFA and whether they need to be done by qualified tradespeople.

It comes at the same time as an MOD statement that work to refurbish the worst 1,000 homes in the defence estate is on target to be completed by the end of 2025.

The urgent programme is concentrated on heating systems, electrics, plumbing, mould and leaky roofs in properties around the UK, including Larkhill, Haverfordwest in Wales and Holywood in Northern Ireland.

The new permanent enhancements process offers families the chance to make changes without the need to restore the house to its previous condition on move-out.

It follows the decision earlier this year to introduce a new colour palette for military homes.

Green category changes

Green category changes can be made by a family member or tradesperson without having to notify DIO or Pinnacle. They will be recorded by Housing Officers at move-out.

They include blinds and shutters, shelving, curtain poles and battery-powered doorbells.

Amber category changes

Amber enhancements must be carried out by qualified tradespeople and families must let DIO or Pinnacle know using the new simplified process what they’re planning before work starts.

The category includes work like installing external power supplies or taps and garden decking. They can be left on move-out as long as the quality of the work is good enough and it has the necessary paperwork.
