The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has bought 281 new-build homes in Gloucestershire to be used as SFA.
The homes are on existing housing developments near Imjin Barracks, Innsworth, where NATO’s Allied Rapid Reaction Corps is based. They will be occupied by personnel and families from Signals regiments relocating under the Defence Estate Optimisation Army Programme.
Construction started in 2023 and was completed in phases. The first families were able to move in almost two years ago.
The new SFA homes feature photovoltaic panels to generate green energy, low carbon heating systems, smart heating controls and electric vehicle charging points. Families have already reported a reduction in their energy bills as a result.
Work on new SLA blocks, garages and workshops, administration buildings and improved gym facilities is under way at the barracks.
And some existing SFA has also undergone improvement in recent years, including new boilers and heating systems, external wall insulations and replacing doors and windows.
Programme Director Belinda Lunn said: “This project means hundreds more Service families will benefit from modern, high-quality homes close to Imjin Barracks.”
AFF is pleased to see work starting to move but recognises that some families will not be seeing major changes. They should continue to use the correct Pinnacle process to flag issues and raise them with AFF if they have not been resolved after this.
The Defence Housing Strategy involves an investment of £9.2 billion to build new SFA homes and modernise existing housing over a decade.
